(HARRISBURG) Following Gov. Tom Wolf’s annual budget address before a joint session of the General Assembly at the state Capitol today, Reps. Dan Moul (R-Adams) and Kate Klunk (R-York) issued the following statement:
“Two summers ago, in the midst of a state budget impasse and calls for a billion-dollar bond to help cover a $2 billion budget shortfall, we assembled a group of Republican House members to find the funding necessary to settle the budget.
“Known as the Common Sense Caucus, our group examined the budget – line by line – and were surprised to discover billions of dollars in unused taxpayer dollars sitting idle in various state government accounts.
“Since that time, we have been advocating for the transfer of these ‘shadow budget’ accounts to balance the state budget, as doing so would avoid the tax increases and costly borrowing that have been the hallmark of the budget process in recent years.
“Though the Wolf administration initially denied that these funds were available, we are delighted to see that the governor is now advocating for a similar approach. In fact, the funding in several of those special accounts is included in the revenue for this year’s budget plan. We encourage the governor to avoid any tax increases while that funding remains available.
“We look forward to working with the administration on how we can more effectively use these special funds and ensure greater oversight and transparency.”
