HARRISBURG – Rep. Dan Moul (R-Adams) announced today that his Gettysburg district office ranks among the top legislative offices when it comes to notifying constituents about unclaimed property being held by the state Treasurer’s Office of Unclaimed Property.

Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed property. It is currently holding more than $3 billion and is encouraging residents to step forward and claim it.

“Many people are either not aware of the Treasury’s list of unclaimed property or they do not make a habit of checking it,” said Moul. “My staff routinely checks the list for constituents and notifies them that they have property – often money – being held for them by the state Treasury.”

In 2018, residents of Moul’s district recovered more than $183,000 in unclaimed property – the fifth highest amount in the Commonwealth. The 91st District had a total of 372 claims last year – the third highest in Pennsylvania. Since May of 2017, Moul’s office has notified residents of $1.4 million in unclaimed property.

Money and items end up in the vaults at Treasury through a variety of means, such as when payroll checks are uncashed, safe deposit boxes are abandoned and items are recovered at airports and other state or federal facilities.

“One claimant was unaware that Treasury was holding more than $25,000 in back child support payments,” said Moul. “Her child support claims had gone unpaid for several years and by the time the Commonwealth caught up with the delinquent parent, the department did not know how to reach the claimant. I notified her personally and she was able to make her claim.”

Residents are urged to visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property or call 1-800-222-2046 to see if Treasury is holding any of their unclaimed property. It is simple to make a claim and it costs nothing.

“If any of my constituents receive a letter from my office notifying them of unclaimed property, or if they have questions or need help filing their claims, they can contact my office at 717-334-3010 for free assistance,” said Moul.
